On June 17, 2008, I turned 28. I also got to watch the Lakers get spanked in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, a 39-point shaming by the Boston Celtics. Nothing can more deeply wound a Lakers fan than to see his (my) team lose to the Celtics, let alone for the ninth time in the NBA finals, never mind by nearly 40 points in Boston.

Late one evening I was fixated on my laptop screen with several windows open: editing material, dodging Facebook junkies, replying to correspondence and sifting through my inbox. Typical late night multitasking. I came upon one particular email with an audio file attached.

When she came to speak at New York University, she packed the room. It might have been the weirdest crowd I’d ever seen at an Islamic Center at NYU event. (Okay, “weird” is likely too strong—how about odd?) One half of the room were comic book fans who had probably never attended an event hosted by a Muslim institution, and the other half were Muslims awkwardly admitting to themselves and the world that they loved comic books.

Long before the now-infamous scantily clad pictures of the newly crowned Miss USA gyrating against a pole surfaced, the debate surrounding Rima Fakih's triumph was already well under way in certain households.

It’s amazing that David Gardner and Christopher Caldwell both write for The Financial Times. Caldwell’s Reflections on the Revolution in Europe: Immigration, Islam, and the West makes the reader feel more like his wearied psychologist than anything else.

The arrest of Faisal Shahzad, a 30-year-old US citizen of Pakistani descent, as the alleged driver of the vehicle used in the failed Times Square bombing represents an opportunity to respond effectively to a potential act of terrorism – instead of reacting with fear and hysteria that will inevitably be manipulated by extremist elements.

As a fan of South Park going all the way back to its debut in '97, I just have to sort of shake my head at the dust-up that's been working its way through the news cycle since last Wednesday. When the banner 200th episode of Comedy Central's signature series poked at the notion (erroneous, in my opinion) that any depiction of Islam's Prophet Muhammad is disallowed in the media for fear of backlash by extremist-types, it inevitably led to a backlash by some extremist-types. Ah, sweet irony.
