Recent community events have reinforced the fact that there are few socially congruent spaces for American Muslims. Viable areas to socialize outside of masajid that factor in the varying perspectives relating to gender interaction and music lends to an atmosphere where there are few, if any, universally accepted social outlets for American Muslims.

I grew up in Oakland between two areas. My mother’s on 11th Avenue, which was known as Funktown, and 43rd Sstreet in North Oakland with my younger cousins and uncles. I was raised on Reaganomics and the crack epidemic.
